He has earned the M.S. degree in computer science engineering in 1998 and the Ph.D. in Bioengineering in 2005. From 2023 he is Full Professor in Biomedical Engineering and head of LISiN laboratory.<\/p>\n

Marco Gazzoni graduated in Computer Science Engineering in 1998 at Politecnico di Torino. In 2005 he obtained the PhD degree in Biomedical Engineering from the Politecnico di Torino. From 2015 he is head of the Laboratory of Engineering of Neuromuscular System and motor rehabilitation (LISiN). From 2023 he is Full professor in Biomedical Engineering at Politecnico di Torino.<\/p>\n

His chief expertise concerns the development of surface EMG techniques (detection and processing) for the non-invasive investigation of the neuromuscular system with applications in basic physiology, ergonomics, rehabilitation, and sport science.<\/p>\n

He was involved in the Concerted Action SENIAM (Surface Electromyography for Non Invasive Assessment of Muscles), in the RTD European Projects NEW (Neuromuscular assessment in the Elderly Workers 2001-2004), OASIS (On Asymmetry In Sphincters 2002-2005), CyberManS (Cybernetic manufacturing systems, 2006-2008), and in the ESA Project MESM (Microgravity Effects on Skeletal Muscles).<\/p>\n

He acts as a reviewer for international journals, both engineering and clinical, among which IEEE Transactions on Biomedical Engineering, IEEE Transactions on Neural Systems & Rehabilitation Engineering, Medical Engineering & Physics, Medical & Biological Engineering & Computing, Journal of Applied Physiology, Journal of Electrophysiology and Kinesiology.<\/p>\n

Prof. R. Merletti obtained his Ph.D. from The Ohio State University in 1972. After an experience in industry he spent four years at the NeuroMuscular Research Center of Boston University and was Professor of Biomedical Engineering at Politecnico di Torino until the end of 2015. \u00a0He was the founder and the director of the Laboratory for Engineering of the Neuromuscular System (LISiN) at Politecnico di Torino until Nov 2015<\/p>\n

Prof. Roberto Merletti graduated in Electronic Engineering at Politecnico di Torino (Torino, Italy) in 1968. In 1970 and 1972 he obtained the Master of Science and the PhD in Electrical Engineering at The Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio (U.S.A.), with specialization in Biomedical Engineering. <\/span><\/p>\n

After a period of six years (from 1973 to 1979) of research activity at Sorin Biomedica in the fields of cardiac and neuromuscular stimulation, from 1980 to 1981 he was consultant for the Massachusetts Institute of Technology of Cambridge (U.S.A.) and researcher at the NeuroMuscular Research Lab. of the Children’s Hospital Medical Center, Boston (U.S.A.). <\/span><\/p>\n

In 1980 he started his research activity in the neuromuscular field at Politecnico di Torino, Torino (Italy) where he was Full Professor of Biomedical Engineering at the Department of Electronics and Telecommunications. From 1989 to 1994 he was researcher at the NeuroMuscular Research Center of Boston University and Tenured Professor at the Department of Biomedical Engineering of the same University.<\/span><\/p>\n

In 1997 he estabilished the LISiN (Laboratory for Engineering of the Neuromuscular System and motor rehabilitation). <\/span>He has been partner or coordinator of six european projects and two ESA projects. <\/span><\/p>\n

Prof. Merletti is Member of the Advisory Board of Journal of Electromyography and Kinesiology, of the Editorial Board of Physiological Measurement, and of the Editorial Board of Biomedical Signal Processing and Control. He has been Member of the Editorial Board of IEEE Transactions on Biomedical Engineering and of the Editorial Board of European J. of Applied Physiology. He has been Guest Editor of a Special Issue of Medical Engineering and Physics (1999), of a Special Issue of Journal of Electromyography and Kinesiology (2000), of a Special Issue of Physiological Measurement (2009), and of a Special Issue of Critical Reviews in Biomedical Engineering (2011). He has been President of the Congress of Biomedical Engineering in Exercise and Sport (March 2006) and President of the Congress of the International Society for Electrophysiology and Kinesiology (June 2006). <\/span><\/p>\n

Among his publications in the field of engineering of the neuromuscolar system there are five international books, four chapters in international books, more than 200 articles in international journals, about 30 articles in Italian journals, and over a hundred publications in proceedings of international congresses<\/span>.<\/p>\n

Alberto Botter is M.Sc. in Electronic Engineering and Ph.D in Biomedical Engineering. Since 2006, he is with the Laboratory for Engineering of the Neuromuscular System of Politecnico di Torino. Currently, he is Associate Professor at Politecnico di Torino.<\/p>\n

Alberto Botter was born in Biella in 1980. He obtained the M.Sc. degree in Electronic Engineering and the Ph.D. degree Biomedical Engineering from Politecnico di Torino in 2005 and in 2011 respectively. Since 2006 he is with the Laboratory for Engineering of the Neuromuscular System. Currently, he is Associate Professor at Politecnico di Torino.<\/p>\n

His main expertise are in the areas of signal processing applied to biomedical signals, basic and applied physiology of the neuromuscular system, surface electromyography, and neuromuscular electrical stimulation. He has an extensive experience on the study of muscle response to electrically induced contractions. Recently, his activities have been focused on the integration of high density EMG and ultrasonographic techniques for non-invasive investigation of electrical and mechanical properties of the muscle.<\/p>\n

Dr. Botter is author\/co-author of about 40 publications in peer-reviewed journals, he is part of the Editorial Board of Frontiers in Exercise Physiology, and serves as a reviewer for several international journals. He has one international patent application concerning a novel technique for simultaneous ultrasonic and electromyographic imaging of the muscle. Dr. Botter accumulated extensive teaching experience by participating as invited lecturer in international courses and by providing his didactic services at Politecnico di Torino.<\/p>\n

Dr. Vieira has earned the Ph.D. degree in Biomedical Engineering in 2006. He is Associate professor at Politecnico di Torino.\u00a0 He earned several international awards. He is member of the Editorial Board of three peer-reviewed journals and member of the Executive Council of the Italian Society of Clinical Movement Analysis.<\/p>\n

Dr. Taian Vieira was Born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 1980.\u00a0 He graduated in Motor Sciences at the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) in 2005.\u00a0 In 2007, he obtained the Master of Science in Biomedical Engineering from the same university.\u00a0 With a doctoral scholarship provided by the Brazilian Research Council (CNPq), in 2011 he obtained the PhD degree in Biomedical Engineering from the Politecnico di Torino (Turin, Italy).\u00a0 Since then, he has been working in the fields of muscle neurophysiology, posture control, EMG-Biofeedback and electrical stimulation applied to healthy and disabled subjects.<\/p>\n

Throughout his doctoral studies, Dr. Taian Vieira received two presentation awards by international, scientific societies.\u00a0 In 2011, he was the inaugural winner of the Emerging Scientist Award of the International Society of Biomechanics, sponsored by Prof. Carlo De Luca.<\/p>\n

From September 2011 to August 2016 Dr. Vieira was Associate Professor at the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro.\u00a0 In addition to the teaching experience accumulated as Associate Professor, Dr Vieira was invited to hold lectures within international courses and conferences.<\/p>\n

Dr. Taian Vieira has established collaborations with researchers in Italy and abroad.\u00a0 These collaborations have resulted in successful, grant applications; Dr. Taian Vieira has participated as PI and Co-PI in research projects funded by international and national agencies.<\/p>\n

Dr Vieira has been Member of the Editorial Board of three, peer-reviewed journals: Journal of Electromyography and Kinesiology, Frontiers in Psychology and Frontiers in Physiology.\u00a0 Within Frontiers in Physiology, he and Dr. Hodson-Tole recently promoted a Special Issue on the spatio-temporal mechanisms underpinning muscle force production.\u00a0 He has authored nearly 45 manuscripts published in high-impact journals in the field of health sciences and biomedical engineering.\u00a0 Currently, Dr. Taian Vieira serves as reviewer for several, peer reviewed journals.<\/p>\n

Giacinto Luigi Cerone is M.Sc. and PhD in Biomedical Engineering. Currently, he is a fixed-term assistant professor at the Laboratory for Engineering of the Neuromuscular System at Politecnico di Torino. His main activity concerns the hardware, firmware and software design and certification of devices for\u00a0 bio-signal acquisition and electrical stimulation.<\/p>\n

Giacinto Luigi Cerone obtained the M.Sc. degree and PhD in Biomedical Engineering summa cum laude from Politecnico di Torino, Torino, Italy, respectively in 2014 and 2019. Currently he is a Fixed-term assistant professor at the Laboratory for Engineering of the Neuromuscular System at Politecnico di Torino.<\/p>\n

His main activity concerns the hardware, firmware and software design and certification of innovative biomedical instrumentation with a particular focus on modular, wireless and embedded systems for the acquisition of electrophysiological signals, the neuromuscular electrical stimulation and the tele-monitoring of vital parameters.<\/span><\/p>\n

His research output led to the\u00a0creation of the Politecnico’s academic spin-off Rec Bioengineering<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In 2020 he was awarded as “Innovative Engineer of the Year” by Ordine degli Ingegneri della Provincia di Torino ( the Turin Engineering Association).<\/p>\n

Marco Gagliardi is a Ph.D. candidate in Bioengineering and Medical-Surgical Sciences at Politecnico di Torino. His research focuses on optimizing Botulinum Toxin (BT) administration for spastic paresis using high-density electromyography (HD-EMG) and artificial intelligence. He previously worked as a Research Fellow, investigating neural excitation distribution in muscle volume.<\/span>

The PhD project developed under a cotutelle agreement between the Politecnico di Torino and the University of Jyv\u00e4skyl\u00e4, Jyv\u00e4askyla (Finland) focused on studying the\u00a0neurophysiological mechanisms related to cortical sensorimotor integration by using new innovative wireless and miniaturized EEG-EMG technologies.\u00a0The use of these technologies can be useful to detect and quantify different neuro- and electro-physiological processes and understand the complex pathways taking place at different levels of the neuromuscular system.<\/p>\n

The research project was focused on\u00a0 the control of human standing balance and surface electromyography and in particular on the possibility of using biofeedback systems based on biological-related signals (i.e., electromyograms) to improve balance control especially in aged subjects.<\/p>\n

As PhD student, he has published 2 peer-reviewed papers in international journals, 1 peer-reviewed paper in international conference and served as a reviewer for international journals.\u00a0<\/p>\n
